- White Hardboard from Home Depot: This material is incredibly inexpensive and provides a sturdy yet lightweight base. Alternatives include MDF or plywood, which also work wonderfully. For convenience, pre-cut hardboard is also available on Amazon.
- Circular Saw or Utility Knife and Straight Edge: Needed to cut the hardboard to a manageable size before tackling the letter shape. A circular saw offers precision for straight cuts, while a utility knife with a robust straight edge can work for thinner hardboard.
- Scroll Saw or Jigsaw: Essential for cutting out the intricate shape of your chosen letter. A scroll saw is perfect for detailed curves and internal cuts, while a jigsaw is versatile for larger letters and general shapes.
- For Purchasing a Pre-Cut Letter (Time-Saving Option):
- If you prefer to save time and effort on cutting, numerous online retailers offer pre-cut wooden or MDF letters. These options typically range in size from 12″ to 30″, providing ample variety.
- Explore CraftCuts, a highly recommended source, where you can select virtually any size and font. Opt for a thinner MDF option for the most budget-friendly choice without compromising on quality.
- DAP RapidFuse All Purpose Adhesive: This quick-setting adhesive is crucial for securely attaching the felt balls. Its fast-drying nature significantly speeds up the project.
- Paint (Optional): Choose a paint color that closely matches or complements your felt balls. This step is recommended to ensure that any small gaps between the felt balls blend seamlessly with the letter’s base, preventing the underlying material from starkly showing through.

Step-by-Step Tutorial for Personalized Felt Ball Wall Art

Crafting these DIY wall letters typically takes about 4 hours per letter. However, if you opt for a store-bought, pre-cut letter, your project time will be significantly reduced! This tutorial includes detailed instructions for cutting your own letter, but feel free to skip those initial steps if you’ve already purchased a pre-made base.

Draw or trace your desired letter onto your hardboard, MDF, or wood.
Begin by outlining your chosen letter onto your base material. A simple method is to use an existing large letter as a guide, as I did with a letter “A” from our foyer. Alternatively, select a favorite font on your computer, enlarge it, and have it printed at a local copy shop. Cut out the printed template and trace it onto your board. For the artistically inclined, freehand drawing your letter can add an even more personal touch. Ensure your outline is clear and bold, as this will guide your cutting in the next step.

With your scroll saw or jigsaw, precisely follow your drawn outline to cut out your decorative letter. Don’t be overly concerned if your cuts aren’t absolutely perfect; one of the best features of this project is how forgiving it is! The dense placement of the felt balls will elegantly conceal any minor imperfections, making this a stress-free crafting experience. This adaptability is precisely why I adore using felt balls for these DIY letters.
For letters requiring interior cuts (such as ‘A’, ‘B’, ‘D’, ‘O’, ‘P’, ‘Q’, ‘R’), use a paddle bit or a standard drill bit to create one or more starter holes within the area to be removed. Once the hole is drilled, insert your saw blade into it and continue cutting along the inner outline. Always prioritize safety by wearing appropriate protective gear and securing your workpiece firmly.

Work efficiently, moving from one felt ball to the next, but exercise caution to avoid shifting any balls that haven’t fully adhered. You can arrange them in a random, colorful pattern or create a specific design to match your vision. The key is to cover the entire surface for a lush, full appearance.
