Before we begin, gather all your supplies. Having everything ready will make the crafting process smooth and enjoyable. Here’s what you’ll need:

Now that you have all your materials, let’s get crafting! Follow these steps to bring your personalized Advent calendar to life.

Step 1: Preparing Your Advent Calendar Base with Paint

Begin by painting your paper mache Advent calendar. This step allows you to set the foundation for your calendar’s overall aesthetic. Choose a color that will complement your child’s room or your holiday decor. For Avery’s calendar, I opted for a metallic blue-green, giving it a sophisticated and festive shimmer. Attley’s calendar received a dull white coat, providing a soft, versatile backdrop for her colorful numbers. Apply the paint evenly and allow it to dry completely according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Patience here ensures a professional finish.

Step 2: Crafting and Painting the Rooftop Pieces

Next, we’ll create the charming rooftop for your Advent calendar. Take your chipboard and cut two pieces, each measuring 1 1/2″ wide x 5″ long. These dimensions are ideal for forming a perfectly proportioned roof on most standard paper mache Advent calendar bases. Once your chipboard pieces are cut, paint them to match the color you used for your Advent calendar base. This continuity in color creates a cohesive and polished look, making the calendar appear like a miniature festive house. Allow these pieces to dry thoroughly.

Step 3: Precision Cutting Your Advent Calendar Numbers with Cricut

While your painted pieces are drying, it’s the perfect time to personalize your Advent calendar drawers with numbers. This is where your Cricut Explore Air 2 or similar cutting machine truly shines. I designed all my cut files directly in Cricut Design Space, which offers incredible flexibility for customization. Precision is key here; measure the Advent calendar drawers carefully to ensure your numbers are appropriately sized and centered.

For Avery’s calendar, I chose shimmering silver glitter vinyl, which provides a clean, modern, and sparkly finish. For Attley’s, reflecting her vibrant personality, I used various colors of cardstock, creating a fun and eclectic look. One of the greatest advantages of Cricut Explore machines is their ability to precisely cut hundreds of different materials. This includes popular craft staples like cardstock, vinyl, and iron-on, as well as specialty materials such as glittery paper, polished foils, and even bonded fabric. This versatility makes personalized projects like this incredibly accessible and professional-looking.

Step 4: Attaching the Numbers to Each Drawer

Once your paint is completely dry and your numbers are cut, it’s time to affix them to each Advent calendar drawer. The method for attachment will depend on the material you chose for your numbers. For Avery’s calendar, which used adhesive vinyl, the process was straightforward: I simply peeled and stuck the numbers onto the drawers. Since these numbers were relatively small and easy to manage, I found that transfer tape wasn’t strictly necessary, allowing for quick and accurate placement.

For Attley’s cardstock numbers, a reliable glue stick was my tool of choice. Apply a thin, even layer of glue to the back of each cardstock number and carefully position it onto the center of its corresponding drawer. Press gently to ensure good adhesion. This step adds the essential countdown element and further enhances the personalized look of each calendar.

Step 5: Securing the Festive Rooftop

With your calendar drawers numbered, it’s time to add the charming rooftop. Using a hot glue gun, carefully attach the two painted chipboard pieces to the top of your Advent calendar. First, apply a bead of hot glue along the long edge of one chipboard piece and press it firmly onto the top edge of your calendar base. Repeat this with the second chipboard piece, ensuring both sides are securely attached to the base. Finally, apply a small amount of hot glue along the top edge where the two chipboard pieces meet, gently pressing them together to form a neat, peaked roof. Hold them in place for a few seconds until the glue sets. This step transforms your simple box into a festive little house, adding significant character to your Advent calendar.

Step 6: Adding Decorative Touches with Bottlebrush Trees

The final step is to adorn your Advent calendar with decorative elements. Bottlebrush trees are perfect for adding a miniature, whimsical touch to your rooftop. If desired, you can personalize these small trees with glitter, tiny beads, or paint to match your calendar’s theme. Once decorated, use your hot glue gun to attach them securely to the top of the Advent calendar box, near the peak of the roof or clustered around it. And there you have it! The entire process for each DIY Advent calendar took me approximately an hour, from start to finish. The effort was truly worth it. When my girls arrived home from school and saw their personalized creations, their excitement was palpable.
