After months of meticulous planning, tireless effort, and perhaps a few literal splinters along the way, we are absolutely thrilled to finally unveil our complete DIY deck makeover! This ambitious project, which commenced back in May and concluded just ten days ago, has truly been a labor of love. While the timeline felt extensive, this unhurried pace allowed us to embrace every aspect of the DIY process, tackling each challenge and decision with thoughtfulness and precision, resulting in an outdoor space that perfectly reflects our vision and hard work.

Come check out our complete and total DIY deck makeover! It took months for us to rebuild it and furnish it, but is so worth it! This inviting deck features modern outdoor furniture, stylish fire columns, and ample seating for entertaining guests or relaxing with family.

To truly appreciate the magnitude of this transformation, let’s cast our minds back to what our deck looked like before we embarked on this extensive renovation. It was an aging structure, a grand old dame of 31 years, whose glory had long faded. The wooden planks were badly splintered and worn, making it an uncomfortable and somewhat hazardous surface, certainly not ideal for bare feet or lively gatherings. Adding to its dated appearance was an orange-toned stain that, frankly, was never truly our style and simply didn’t align with the modern aesthetic we envisioned for our home.

These initial photographs capture the deck’s condition from when we first moved into the house. It remained largely unchanged for years, save for one significant improvement: the removal of an unsightly privacy fence. This old fence was cleverly repurposed and transformed into a striking DIY herringbone plank wall a couple of years ago, a project that hinted at the transformative power of DIY design and laid the groundwork for future outdoor aspirations.

The renovation began with a comprehensive demolition phase. We started by meticulously ripping off all the original benches – the very ones that had, quite literally, given me splinters in my backside on more than one occasion. Suffice it to say, they were not missed! Following the benches, all the old, worn decking boards were systematically removed. This careful deconstruction allowed us to assess the underlying structure, and much to our relief and gratitude, the existing framing was in remarkably good shape. This discovery was a significant win, as it meant we could retain the exact same foundational layout, saving us considerable time, effort, and material costs by not having to rebuild the entire framework.

Our design philosophy centered on maximizing openness and creating an inviting flow. Since our deck sits relatively low to the ground, local building codes fortunately did not mandate the installation of traditional railings. This freed us to explore alternative, more aesthetic and functional design elements. In lieu of railings, we made the conscious decision to build elegant, expansive wrap-around stairs, which not only enhance accessibility but also add a touch of architectural grandeur. Additionally, we incorporated a fantastic DIY outdoor bar, an element that has quickly become a favorite feature of the new space. For the finish, we opted for a darker, more neutral brown stain, a choice that has brought us immense satisfaction. This rich, contemporary hue perfectly complements our home’s exterior and provides a sophisticated backdrop for our new outdoor furniture. The result is a seamless blend of style and practicality that we absolutely adore.

As you’ve probably observed, our new deck features an abundance of seating options, and we couldn’t be happier about it! Creating a versatile space for both intimate family moments and larger social gatherings was a key priority during our deck design. You might also have noticed the thoughtful blend of materials in our outdoor furniture selection: a harmonious mixture of durable all-weather wicker pieces and elegant natural wood accents. This, my friends, is what we affectionately call compromise and a true testament to blending individual preferences into a cohesive design!

I was particularly drawn to the low-maintenance and modern aesthetic of all-weather wicker, while Joe favored the timeless beauty and warmth of natural wood. To perfectly marry our two visions, we carefully chose a dining set that features a robust Teak table paired with comfortable all-weather wicker chairs. This combination provides the best of both worlds, offering durability and classic style. Complementing this, we added a pair of inviting oversized Acacia rockers, perfect for relaxing with a book or enjoying a peaceful evening outdoors. To complete our entertainment zone, we incorporated stylish all-weather wicker bar stools, providing casual seating at our new DIY outdoor bar. With these carefully selected pieces, everyone in the family, and all our guests, are sure to find their happy place on our new deck!
