My Home Office Before: A Journey from Industrial to Inspired

To truly appreciate the transformation, let’s take a quick look back at how my home office existed for the past few years. It’s crucial to understand the “before” to grasp the “why” behind every design decision that led to this stunning “after.”

Industrial-style home office before its vibrant transformation

While certainly “pretty” in its own right, the previous iteration of my home office leaned heavily into an industrial farmhouse aesthetic. The reason for this specific style wasn’t entirely intentional; it was more a consequence of inherited infrastructure. This room originally served as my girls’ playroom, and for that purpose, we had built sturdy industrial pipe shelves and desks. They offered fantastic storage for toys and school supplies, perfectly suited for a lively playroom environment.

However, when I claimed the space as my home office, I made a common design mistake. Instead of dismantling the existing shelves from the outset – a decision I now realize would have saved much effort – I tried to “work with them.” This meant basing the entire decor scheme around these dominant industrial elements. The result, while aesthetically pleasing to some, ultimately felt dark, somewhat cramped, and critically, it failed to provide the specialized storage I desperately needed for my ever-growing collection of paints, craft supplies, camera equipment, and project materials. It lacked the bright, inspiring energy essential for creative work, and its industrial nature often overshadowed the potential for a truly personal and functional workspace.

The Strategic Plan for My Home Office Makeover & Craft Room

After successfully completing our extensive kitchen renovation, my focus immediately shifted to tackling my home office and craft room. I knew this space desperately needed attention to better support my workflow and creative pursuits. My first step was to grab my trusted copy of Designer in a Binder – and yes, I genuinely use it for my own projects! I meticulously assessed what worked and what didn’t in the existing layout, identified pieces that could stay or be sold (helping to fund new purchases!), and then meticulously crafted a new design plan and floor plan.

Strategic planning for home office and craft room using Designer in a Binder for furniture scale

My overarching goals for this dual home office and craft room makeover were clear and precise:

  • Lighter and Brighter: To banish the dark, industrial feel and infuse the room with an uplifting, energizing atmosphere.
  • Enhanced Dual-Person Functionality: To create a desk area that comfortably accommodates two people working simultaneously, as my husband Joe often handles accounting here, and my content manager, Thea, sometimes works alongside me.
  • Abundant, Optimized Storage: To integrate ample, highly functional storage solutions specifically designed for paint, craft supplies, camera gear, and various project materials, moving beyond generic shelving.
  • Dedicated Creative Zone: To establish a distinct area optimized for hands-on projects and, crucially, for seamless YouTube content filming. This was a particularly important consideration, as I’m dedicating significant effort to my YouTube channel this Fall, and an efficient filming setup was non-negotiable.

I was confident we could achieve these objectives efficiently and effectively. The need for a dedicated YouTube filming space was a major driving force, necessitating a setup that would allow for quick and easy camera and lighting arrangements. This wasn’t just about aesthetics; it was about creating a powerhouse of productivity and creativity. The transformation was not just desired, but truly essential for my evolving professional needs.

Achieving Our Goals: The Stunning Transformation

I’m absolutely thrilled to report that we didn’t just meet our goals for this room – we exceeded them! The transformation has been nothing short of remarkable. We successfully lightened and brightened the entire space, creating a far more inviting and inspiring environment. The functionality for dual-person work is now seamless, and the storage solutions are a dream come true for organizing my extensive array of craft and work supplies.

One of the most satisfying aspects of this makeover was our ability to sell all the old furniture, including those imposing industrial bookshelves. What makes this even more exciting is that the proceeds from these sales covered an incredible 90% of the cost of all the new items. This was a huge win, proving that thoughtful planning and resourcefulness can make a significant impact on your budget when undertaking a home renovation project. It truly felt like a self-funded transformation, allowing us to invest in a space that perfectly serves our needs without a hefty out-of-pocket expense.

My Home Office Makeover Reveal: A Dual-Purpose Workspace Oasis

Welcome to the heart of my home office, now a distinctly zoned and highly efficient workspace. This area is specifically designed as our primary work zone, engineered to function flawlessly for two people working simultaneously – a critical requirement for our dynamic needs. My husband, Joe, often utilizes this space on his days off to manage our accounting and books, while my incredible Content Manager, Thea, also joins me in person periodically. The goal was to create a harmonious, productive environment for all.

The most impactful change in this zone was the complete swap of all furniture to a crisp, clean white. This simple color palette transformation made an immediate and dramatic difference, instantly injecting light and a sense of spaciousness into the room. We maintained our trusted IKEA Alex drawer units, but traded the previous black for white, creating a fresh aesthetic. These versatile Alex units were paired with IKEA Linnmonn tabletops to form our individual desks, offering ample personal workspace. The brilliant centerpiece of this setup is a middle table, creatively constructed from an IKEA Kallax bookshelf topped with another Linnmonn desktop. This modular combination is not only incredibly functional, providing additional storage and surface area, but also remarkably affordable – a true testament to IKEA’s smart design.

Underneath the central table, we added a pair of inexpensive IKEA stools. This thoughtful addition ensures that our girls can comfortably join us in the office, whether they’re tackling homework, engaging in a game of cards, or simply being present while we work. It truly makes the office a versatile family space.

Bright home office with a functional double desk setup and gallery wall

For the gallery wall, we integrated a few new, budget-friendly IKEA prints. However, the most significant visual upgrade came from simply switching all the art frames to white. It’s astonishing how dramatically the same beloved art prints are transformed and elevated when presented in fresh, unifying white frames. This seemingly small change played a huge role in achieving our “lighter and brighter” aesthetic. Mission accomplished with style and affordability!

Beside my desk, the prominent white wall of cabinetry is part of the robust IKEA Pax system. This was an earlier addition that we wisely decided to retain in the makeover, as it continues to serve its purpose exceptionally well. The Pax system is instrumental for storing larger items, including my essential camera equipment, a vast array of paints, and various supplies prepped for upcoming projects. While it has proven incredibly useful, I must admit it was a more substantial investment. In terms of sheer value and adaptable utility, I find myself loving the IKEA Algot craft room storage system even more – but you’ll get to see that game-changer in the craft room reveal, just a moment away!

My Craft Room Reveal: The Ultimate Creative Sanctuary with IKEA Algot Storage

And now, for the pièce de résistance – the craft and project zone! This is truly where the magic happens and where my wildest organization dreams have come true. We’ve integrated an entire wall of unparalleled craft room storage utilizing the incredibly versatile IKEA Algot system. I am absolutely head-over-heels in love with this system, and here’s why: this entire wall of modular, adaptable storage cost us less than $500, delivering immense value and functionality. Soon, I’ll be sharing a dedicated post detailing the step-by-step process of installing the Algot system, but for now, let’s just say it’s nothing short of craft room organization heaven.

These photos beautifully illustrate how the vibrant craft zone seamlessly coexists with the more streamlined home office area. Through the elegant French doors, you can catch a glimpse of our inviting family room, highlighting the open and integrated flow of our home’s design.

The Algot craft room storage system truly holds an astonishing amount of supplies. On the top two shelves, I’ve thoughtfully arranged items I frequently use as photo props – pillows, various plants, and decorative accents – keeping them both accessible and visually appealing. Below that, I have dedicated spots for my essential cutting machines: the Cricut and Silhouette. My Cricut EasyPress also has its home here, alongside a cleverly utilized pegboard for organizing smaller, random items like paper towels, various tapes, and my extensive ribbon collection. The numerous drawers below are a dream for everything else – fabric swatches, spools of yarn, tubes of paint, and so much more. In fact, some drawers are completely empty, a testament to just how much storage capacity this system provides. It’s a wonderful problem to have, believe me!

Let’s talk about the true star of the craft zone: my ultimate project table. This incredible piece, also sourced from IKEA, features a brilliant crank mechanism that allows me to effortlessly adjust its height to any desired level. This versatility is a game-changer! I frequently utilize it as a standing desk when engaged in larger projects, which offers both ergonomic benefits and a different perspective. However, the ability to smoothly lower it for intricate tasks like watercolor painting or sewing is invaluable, ensuring optimal comfort and precision for every creative endeavor. It adapts perfectly to my needs, no matter the craft.

Speaking of sewing, a cherished heirloom from my grandmother, her antique sewing chest, has found a new purpose. For years, I held onto it, but it wasn’t truly serving its best function. I finally dedicated time to meticulously sort through its contents and organize all her beautiful threads – by color, of course! These vibrant spools are now neatly hung on the wall, providing both easy access and a delightful visual display. While the chest itself will continue its legacy as Attley’s bedside table, her threads are now perfectly situated in their functional and inspiring new home, honoring her memory in a practical way.

Finally, there’s a zone that exists more out of practical necessity than pure design ambition, and in the spirit of transparency, I want to share it. While many bloggers might shy away from showcasing such areas, I believe in presenting a real-life, honest view of our home. We’ve always needed to make space for our exercise bike within my home office. With no other suitable location in the house, this room perfectly accommodates it. It might not be the prettiest corner, but we are incredibly grateful to have the bike for our fitness routines and, importantly, to have a dedicated spot where it fits without disrupting other areas. So, if you’re among those who also find themselves incorporating exercise equipment into open living spaces, rest assured, you are definitely not alone!

And with that, our comprehensive tour of the new home office and craft room concludes! We are absolutely enchanted with the results and truly love every aspect of this transformed space. It now perfectly aligns with our needs, fostering both productivity and creativity in a bright, organized, and inspiring environment.
