- Electric Driver/Drill: An essential tool for quickly and securely driving screws. Ensure it’s fully charged and you have a variety of bits to match your screws.
- Screws & Drywall Anchors (if needed): The type and size of screws will depend on your tabletop’s thickness and the weight it needs to support. If you cannot secure brackets directly into wall studs, heavy-duty drywall anchors are imperative for stability and safety. Always choose anchors rated for the expected weight of your desk and its contents.
- Tabletop or Wood Piece to Form Desktop: This is the core of your desk.
- Our Choice: We opted for the LINNMON table top from IKEA (measuring 47 1/4″ x 23 5/8″ in the black/brown color). This choice is popular due to its affordability, lightweight design, and clean finish, making it an excellent base for an IKEA hack.
- Alternatives: You can also use a sturdy piece of plywood, a custom-cut wood slab, or even reclaimed wood for a more rustic look. Consider the dimensions that best fit your available space and intended use.
- Brackets: The crucial support for your floating desk.
- We recommend durable L-shaped brackets made from metal for optimal strength. The number of brackets needed will depend on the length of your tabletop; typically, two to three brackets are sufficient for a standard desk length. Ensure they are robust enough to hold the weight of your chosen tabletop and anything you plan to place on it.
- Rub N’ Buff (Optional, for aesthetic customization): If you wish to alter the color or finish of your brackets to match your decor.
- I personally used the Antique Gold color to give a touch of elegance to the metal brackets. This product provides a beautiful, easy-to-apply metallic finish without the mess of spray paint.
- Level: Non-negotiable for ensuring your desk is perfectly horizontal and aesthetically pleasing. A small torpedo level or a longer spirit level will work well.
Step-by-Step Construction Guide: Building Your Easy Floating Desk
With your materials ready, let’s dive into the simple steps to construct your space-saving floating desk. Precision in measuring and leveling is key to a stable and professional-looking finished product.
1) Prepare Your Brackets with Rub N’ Buff (Optional First Step):
Before any installation begins, if you’ve decided to customize the appearance of your metal brackets, now is the time to apply your Rub N’ Buff. This wax-based metallic finish is incredibly easy to use. Simply squeeze a small amount onto a cloth or your finger and rub it onto the bracket surface in small, circular motions. A little goes a long way, and you’ll quickly see the metal transform. Apply in a well-ventilated area, and allow adequate drying time as per the product instructions before handling the brackets for installation. This step ensures your brackets contribute to the overall aesthetic of your room, rather than just being functional supports.
2) Determine Placement and Secure Brackets to the Wall:
This is perhaps the most critical step for the stability and appearance of your floating desk. Start by deciding the ideal height and location for your desk on the wall. Consider the user’s height and whether they will be sitting or standing. Mark the desired height carefully. Next, using a stud finder, locate the wall studs. Anchoring your brackets directly into studs provides the strongest and most secure installation. We strategically spaced our brackets to align perfectly with the wall studs, ensuring maximum stability.
Once you’ve identified the stud locations, mark where each bracket will be mounted. Use your level to ensure these marks are perfectly aligned horizontally. This step is crucial; a crooked desk can be both aesthetically displeasing and functionally awkward. Predrill pilot holes for your screws to prevent wood splitting (if screwing into studs) or to prepare for drywall anchors. If studs aren’t available at your desired locations, you MUST use appropriate heavy-duty drywall anchors specifically designed for the weight your desk will bear. Follow the anchor manufacturer’s instructions carefully for installation. Securely fasten each bracket to the wall using your electric driver, double-checking with the level after each screw is tightened to ensure continued alignment.
3) Attach the Tabletop to the Brackets:
With your brackets firmly mounted, it’s time to place your tabletop. Carefully rest the tabletop onto the installed brackets, ensuring it is centered and aligned as desired. Now, using your electric driver and appropriate screws (make sure they are not too long that they penetrate through the top surface of your desk!), fasten the tabletop to each bracket. We used two screws per bracket arm that connects to the tabletop, which provides excellent stability and prevents any wobbling. Drive the screws firmly but avoid overtightening, especially if your tabletop material is softer or hollow, like some IKEA tabletops. The goal is a snug, secure fit that makes the desk feel like a solid extension of your wall.
