While undeniably authentic, we quickly realized that brick veneers were simply beyond our allocated budget for this particular project. Faced with this financial hurdle, we sought a more economical yet equally impactful alternative. Our search led us to embossed hardboard wall panels designed to mimic brick. The most accessible option within our price range presented itself in a rather uninspiring combination: bright red bricks with stark black mortar. We knew then that simply installing these panels wouldn’t achieve the sophisticated industrial look we desired. This challenge sparked an exciting idea: what if we could completely reinvent the panels with a custom paint job? We were convinced that by applying a new, carefully curated color palette, we could transcend the panels’ default appearance and create a faux brick wall that would truly transform the space into the authentic industrial loft gym we had envisioned.
Mastering the Art of Painting a Realistic Faux Brick Wall
Creating a realistic brick accent wall doesn’t require a hefty budget or professional masonry skills. With a bit of creativity, some paint, and the right technique, you can transform inexpensive embossed hardboard paneling into a stunning feature wall that rivals the look of genuine brick. We’ve honed a method that allows you to achieve depth, character, and an aged aesthetic, perfectly suited for an industrial or vintage-inspired space. - Large Piece of Cardboard: An often-overlooked but incredibly useful item. This serves as your impromptu paint palette, allowing you to mix and blend multiple paint colors simultaneously without creating harsh lines.
- Assorted Paintbrushes: You’ll need brushes of various sizes for detailed work, especially for painting the mortar lines and applying whitewash effects.
- Various Sample Size Paints: The heart of your custom color palette. As detailed below, you’ll need several shades (mid-tones, accents, highlights, mortar, and whitewash) to create a realistic, multi-dimensional brick effect. We’ll provide our specific Sherwin Williams selections, but feel free to adapt based on your desired aesthetic.

One of the most appealing aspects of this DIY faux brick wall project is its affordability. Compared to the cost of installing real brick or even high-quality brick veneers, this method offers significant savings. Here’s a breakdown of our expenses:
- 3 panels of faux brick embossed hardboard @ $25 each = $75

- Total Estimated Cost: Around $130 (This total may vary slightly depending on whether you already own paint brushes, rollers, and other basic painting supplies.)

Finding Your Faux Brick Wall Inspiration
The journey to your perfect faux brick wall begins with inspiration. Before you even think about picking up a paintbrush, spend some time exploring different brick styles and color palettes. A good starting point is to gather inspiration photos that capture the exact look and feel you want to achieve for your space. Pinterest, interior design magazines, and even a walk around older neighborhoods can provide a wealth of ideas.

For our home gym, we were particularly drawn to the industrial loft aesthetic, specifically the charm of old brick walls that had been painted white over time, with the paint naturally wearing off to reveal glimpses of the original brick underneath. This look exudes character and a sense of history, perfect for our vision.

When selecting our brick colors, we opted for a lighter, more neutral palette. This choice was deliberate, as we wanted the brick to seamlessly blend with the beige walls already present in our room, creating a cohesive and harmonious environment rather than a stark contrast. The goal was to make the faux brick feel like an original part of the space.
Developing Your Custom Color Palette
Once you have a clear vision for your faux brick wall, the next critical step is to translate that inspiration into a workable paint color palette. We found the Sherwin Williams ColorSnap app incredibly useful for this. This innovative tool allowed us to capture colors directly from our inspiration photos on screen and then match them to actual Sherwin Williams paint colors available for purchase. This eliminated guesswork and ensured we could faithfully replicate our desired aesthetic.
When selecting colors from your inspiration image, aim for a balanced mix to create depth and realism. Look for at least two mid-tone colors, which will form the primary base of your brick hues. Add two highlight colors that are lighter, simulating areas where light naturally hits the brick. Finally, incorporate two to three accent colors—these can be slightly darker, richer, or even have a subtle different undertone, adding character and variation to individual bricks. While using this many colors might seem daunting initially, this layering technique is key to achieving a truly realistic and dynamic brick appearance, preventing it from looking flat or artificial. Don’t forget to also choose a distinct color for your mortar lines; this contrasting element is vital for defining the brick pattern. We sourced all our paint colors from Sherwin Williams, benefiting from their extensive palette.
Our Proven Faux Brick Color Palette
Here are the specific Sherwin Williams colors we chose to achieve our worn industrial loft brick look. This palette provided the perfect balance of warmth, depth, and aged character:
- Cavern Clay SW 7701 (Mid-tone: A grounding, earthy clay hue that forms the rich base of our brick.)
- Moroccan Brown SW 6060 (Mid-tone: A warm, inviting brown that complements Cavern Clay, adding subtle variation.)
- Fiery Brown SW 6055 (Accent: A deeper, more intense brown for adding sporadic pops of darker brick, simulating older, weathered elements.)
- Baguette SW 6123 (Accent: A muted, soft yellow-beige that brings unexpected warmth and brightness to select bricks.)
- Urbane Bronze SW 7048 (Accent: A sophisticated, deep gray-brown that introduces cooler, more industrial tones and shadows.)
- Rare Gray SW 6199 (Highlight: A soft, subtle gray that brightens certain bricks, mimicking areas where light would naturally fall.)
- Dovetail SW 7017 (Mortar: A versatile medium-gray that creates a clean, authentic contrast for the mortar lines.)
- Kestrel White SW 7516 (Whitewash: Our choice for the aged, worn-white effect, adding a layer of history to the wall.)
PRO TIP: You only need to purchase sample sizes of each paint color! It might seem like a small amount, but for this technique, where you’re layering and blending small quantities, sample pots are more than sufficient to cover even a large accent wall. This also keeps your costs significantly down.
Before you begin painting, ensure all your hardboard wall panels are properly installed. This will allow for a seamless and cohesive paint finish across the entire wall. If you happen to have a leftover piece of the hardboard, we highly recommend using it as a test swatch. Practicing your technique and experimenting with the paint colors on a smaller section first can save you time and potential frustration on the main wall.
The Step-by-Step Painting Process for a Realistic Faux Brick Effect
Once your panels are installed and you’ve prepped your space, it’s time to bring your faux brick wall to life with paint. Follow these steps for an authentic and striking finish:
Step 1: Laying the Mid-Tones for Depth
Begin with the two mid-tone colors from your chosen palette. For us, these were Cavern Clay and Moroccan Brown. The key to this step is natural blending. Pour generous amounts of both mid-tone paints onto your large piece of cardboard. Using a foam paint roller, roll it back and forth over both colors, allowing them to mix organically on the cardboard before applying to the wall. This technique creates a beautiful, variegated base, ensuring no two “bricks” look exactly alike and mimicking the natural imperfections of real brick. Cover the entire wall with these blended mid-tones, focusing on achieving an uneven, textured finish. The foam roller is excellent for this, depositing paint in a way that truly brings out the embossed texture of the hardboard. Avoid pressing too hard, letting the roller do the work to create subtle variations.
Step 2: Introducing Accent and Highlight Colors
Once your mid-tone base is complete, move on to the accent colors. These shades truly define the character and individuality of your bricks. We used Baguette (a bright yellow), Fiery Brown (a dark brown), and Urbane Bronze (a dark gray). The trick here is selective application. Do not aim to cover the entire wall; instead, concentrate these colors in specific, random areas. You can dab, lightly roll, or even dry-brush these accents onto individual bricks or small clusters. This creates visual interest and mimics the diverse coloration found in natural brickwork. Next, apply your highlight colors. We used Rare Gray for this. Highlights should be distributed more liberally across the wall than the accents, but still in a non-uniform manner. These lighter tones catch the eye and add a sense of dimension. If you feel you’ve applied too much of a highlight or accent color, don’t worry! You can always go back with one of your mid-tone colors and lightly blend it back in to tone it down, ensuring a natural, integrated look.
Step 3: Defining the Mortar Lines (Crucial Timing!)
A key lesson we learned early on is to paint the mortar last. When we first started, we attempted to paint the mortar lines first, only to realize that the roller inevitably gets paint into these recessed areas during subsequent steps. To save yourself the rework, apply all your brick colors first. Once the brick colors are dry, take a small paintbrush and your chosen mortar color (we used Dovetail) and carefully paint over the black mortar lines. This step meticulously cleans up the look of your brickwork, covering any stray paint from the previous stages and making the brick pattern truly pop. If you’re aiming for a classic, clean brick look, this would be your final step before sealing.
Step 4: Achieving an Aged, Whitewashed Effect (Optional but Recommended)
For those seeking an old industrial, loft-style feel—like a wall that was once painted white but has naturally weathered over time—whitewashing is the perfect technique. This step adds immense character and authenticity. To begin, significantly water down your white paint (we used Kestrel White). The more diluted it is, the more transparent the wash will be. With a paintbrush, lightly and unevenly brush this watered-down paint onto various portions of the wall. The goal is not to achieve full coverage, but to create a translucent veil, allowing the brick colors underneath to show through. Intentionally leave certain areas completely untouched; these will appear as your more “exposed” and “worn” brick sections.
Once the initial whitewash layer is dry, you can go back with a slightly less diluted white paint. Use this to cover additional areas where you want less of the brick color to show through, or to build up a denser white in certain spots. This layering of diluted and less diluted white paint is crucial for creating that authentic, worn-off paint effect, adding depth and realism to your aged brick wall.
The transformation is truly remarkable, isn’t it? Compare the original red brick and black mortar panels to the dynamic, multi-toned wall created with our custom color palette. Stepping into the room now, the wall convincingly passes for real brick, offering the character and industrial charm we had always envisioned.
This project taught us that achieving an authentic brick look doesn’t require a fortune. Instead, it calls for a little time, dedicated effort, and a willingness to embrace creativity. Remember, you are never confined to the original colors or finishes of pre-fabricated panels. By applying a custom paint palette, you can drastically alter their appearance and unlock endless design possibilities. The sky truly is the limit when it comes to transforming your home with a creative spirit.
