While I used standard craft felt for this project because I preferred its color selection, stiff felt would likely offer even more structural integrity, holding its shape beautifully. Consider experimenting with different felt types to see which you prefer for your ornaments.
- Cricut Maker Cutting Machine: This incredible machine is a game-changer for crafters, transforming intricate cutting tasks into effortless endeavors. It can precisely cut a wide array of materials, including felt, with remarkable accuracy. Using the Cricut Maker will significantly speed up your production time, especially if you plan to make a large batch of ornaments.
- Alternatively, if you prefer a hands-on approach or don’t have a cutting machine, you’ll need: a craft knife, a sturdy ruler for straight lines, a rotary cutter for clean edges, a sewing pencil or fabric marker for tracing, and a self-healing cutting mat to protect your work surface. Manual cutting offers a satisfying connection to your craft, albeit requiring more time and precision.

- Hot Glue Gun and Glue Sticks: A reliable hot glue gun is essential for quick and secure assembly. The fast drying time of hot glue allows for efficient crafting, making the layering process smooth and simple. Ensure you have plenty of glue sticks on hand.
- Transfer Paper (This is the exact transfer paper I used for this project): While typically used for transferring vinyl designs, a less expensive, lower-tack transfer paper is incredibly useful here. It helps secure the felt to your cutting mat, preventing shifting and ensuring precise cuts, while also making cleanup much easier by protecting your mat from felt fibers.
- Cricut Cutting Mat: A clean and sticky cutting mat is crucial for holding your felt in place during the cutting process with your Cricut Maker.
- Ribbon or Suede Cord: Choose a material that complements your felt colors and adds an elegant hanging loop to your ornaments. Ribbons offer a classic look, while suede cords provide a rustic touch.

Step-by-Step Instructions to Create Your Felt Ornaments:
Let’s get started on bringing these unique designs to life! The process is broken down into two main phases: cutting your felt pieces and assembling them.
1) Preparing and Cutting Your Felt Pieces: Precision in cutting is key to the intricate design of these ornaments, ensuring all pieces fit together perfectly. Whether you’re using a cutting machine or cutting by hand, take your time to achieve clean edges.
For Manual Cutting: If you’re embracing the traditional method, download the PDF template I’ve created by clicking here. Print the template and carefully cut out the square shape, paying close attention to all the interior cut lines. Place this template over your chosen felt sheet and use a sewing pencil or fabric marker to transfer all the cut lines onto your felt. Once traced, use your rotary cutter and a ruler to meticulously cut along the straight lines on your felt. For the interior cuts, a sharp craft knife will be your best friend, allowing for detailed and precise work. Take your time to ensure all cuts are clean and accurate.
For Cricut Maker Cutting: For an incredibly fast and precise cutting experience, utilize your Cricut Maker. Access the pre-designed cut files for these unique Christmas ornaments by clicking here. Once you’re logged into Cricut Design Space and have the project open, simply click “Make It” to begin the cutting process. It’s crucial to select the correct blade setting for felt. While the machine might default to a deep cut blade, I highly recommend using the rotary blade for felt, as it provides the cleanest and most precise cuts without dragging or tearing the fabric. If it doesn’t automatically select the rotary blade after you’ve chosen “felt” as your material, switch to it manually. My experience confirms that the rotary blade, even on the standard “felt” setting, delivers perfect results.
Each 9″ x 12″ sheet of felt will yield two complete ornaments, maximizing your material usage. An invaluable tip I discovered (my “AHA!” moment!) that significantly improves the cutting process and keeps your mat clean is to first lay down a sheet of transfer paper onto your Cricut cutting mat. Then, place your felt directly on top of the transfer paper. This simple trick prevents felt fibers from sticking to your cutting mat, extending the mat’s life and ensuring a cleaner workspace. The transfer paper acts as a sacrificial layer, gripping the felt without leaving a residue, making it much easier to remove the cut felt pieces and maintaining the stickiness of your mat for future projects. I cannot recommend this technique enough for felt crafting with your Cricut!
You can clearly see the transfer paper providing a clean buffer layer on my standard grip cutting mat in the image below. This method worked like an absolute charm, and I’ve adopted it for all my felt cutting projects!
2) Assembling Your Felt Ornaments: Once all your felt pieces are perfectly cut – a task made incredibly fast and efficient by the Cricut Maker cutting machine – you’re ready for the most exciting part: assembling your felt ornaments! This is where the magic truly happens, as flat felt pieces transform into beautiful three-dimensional decorations. It provides a clear overview of each step, which can be incredibly helpful for visual learners. Following the video, you’ll find detailed written instructions to guide you through the process.
To begin the assembly, take one of your cut felt pieces. You will notice a small square in the very center. Your task is to fold the opposing corners of this central square in towards each other. Apply a tiny dab of hot glue to one corner, then carefully bring the other corner directly on top of it. Press and hold firmly for a few seconds until the hot glue sets. This creates the first foundational fold of your ornament. Ensure the glue is fully cooled before moving on to prevent any shifting.
3) Continuing the Pattern and Finishing Touches: Now, for a crucial step to maintain the beautiful alternating pattern of your ornament: after you’ve glued the first set of corners, carefully FLIP THE ORNAMENT OVER to the other side. Then, repeat the folding and gluing process with the next set of opposing corners of the next square. It’s incredibly important to remember to flip the ornament each time you glue a new set of corners. I speak from experience – I may have forgotten to flip mine a couple of times, leading to a slightly different (but still charming!) pattern, hence my emphasis on this point! Consistently flipping ensures the symmetrical, multi-layered effect that makes these ornaments so captivating.
Continue this rhythm of gluing a pair of corners, then flipping the ornament, until all the squares have been folded and securely glued. Once all your gluing is complete and the ornament has taken its full dimensional shape, it’s time to add the hanger. Thread your chosen ribbon or suede cord through the small hole located at the very top of the ornament. If you wish to add an extra touch of elegance or rustic charm, now is the perfect time to string on some wood beads before tying the knot. This step is entirely optional, but it can add a lovely finishing detail. Finally, tie a secure knot at the end of your ribbon or cord to create a loop for hanging. Your unique felt Christmas ornaments are now ready to be proudly displayed on your Christmas tree, adding a truly personal and festive touch to your holiday decor!
