  • While a vinyl cutting machine offers customizability, pre-made address stickers can work, though their adhesion and removal properties with paint may vary.
• Transfer paper (Silhouette brand or a large, affordable roll)
• Craft knife
• An old credit card or a vinyl scraper

Steps to number your wood stairs:

1. If you are opting for pre-made stickers, you can skip directly to Step 2. For those using vinyl, begin by designing your desired numbers within your cutting machine’s software. Crucially, measure your stair risers accurately and ensure your design dimensions will fit perfectly. Once your design is finalized, cut it out and carefully “weed” the excess vinyl, leaving only your numbers.

2. This next step is paramount, whether you’re using store-bought stickers or custom-cut vinyl. Carefully apply your numbers to a piece of transfer paper that has been cut to a size roughly similar to your numbers. This ingenious technique provides a square or rectangular guide, making it immeasurably easier to position your numbers perfectly straight on the risers. Trust us on this—trying to align individual numbers freehand can be a frustrating exercise! We learned this the hard way during our first few applications.

3. Once you’ve precisely positioned the transfer tape on your stair riser and are confident the number is exactly where you want it, take an old credit card or a dedicated vinyl scraper. Firmly rub across the entire surface of the transfer tape. This action ensures that the vinyl number adheres securely to the painted stair riser, preparing it for the next step: removing the transfer paper. Vinyl is generally very forgiving; if you make a slight mistake, you can often gently peel it off and reposition it without damaging the paint underneath. However, exercise caution with non-vinyl address stickers, as they might not be as forgiving and could potentially lift paint upon removal.

4. After thoroughly rubbing your vinyl into place, slowly and carefully peel the transfer paper off at an angle. If any part of the vinyl seems reluctant to stick, gently press it back down with your scraper and try peeling the transfer paper again from a different angle.
