A collection of seven colorful backyard games under a blue banner that reads, "outdoor games."

As a busy parent, I understand that while the idea of outdoor family games is always appealing, the reality can sometimes be a bit challenging. Let’s be honest, especially in the sweltering heat and humidity of Southern summers, the thought of engaging in certain backyard games after a long day of work, cooking, and tidying up isn’t always my top priority. After-dinner playtime often presents the most tolerable temperatures, making it the ideal window for outdoor activities. However, my energy levels might not always match my children’s enthusiasm for just any game. So, when our daughters ask to play after dinner, there are genuinely only a few cherished outdoor games that will consistently earn an enthusiastic “yes” from me.

I suspect I’m not alone in feeling this way. That’s precisely why I’ve compiled this list: it’s dedicated to the yard games that my husband, daughters, and I truly love and consistently have a fantastic time playing. These classic lawn games are perfect for older kids and younger ones alike, offering fun and engagement across different age groups. They’re a guaranteed source of great times, even on the warmest summer evenings, proving that family outdoor fun doesn’t have to be a chore—it can be a genuine pleasure for everyone involved.

Yard Games We Have and Actually Love to Play

Cornhole

Cornhole, also widely known as bean bag toss, is a universally beloved outdoor game that’s incredibly easy to learn and perfectly suited for every member of the family, regardless of age or skill level. The premise is simple yet engaging: players take turns tossing bean bags at two elevated boards, each with a hole near the top. The objective is to strategically land the bean bags into the holes or onto the board to score points, aiming for friendly competition.

This classic game offers more than just entertainment; it’s a fantastic way to improve hand-eye coordination, develop strategic thinking, and foster teamwork skills when played in pairs. It naturally promotes healthy, friendly competition and provides countless opportunities for laughter and memorable family moments.

If you’ve followed my journey on Instagram, you’ve undoubtedly caught glimpses of my family and me enjoying spirited rounds of Cornhole in our backyard. We actually crafted our own custom set years ago, and it remains a steadfast favorite. Every time we play, it’s a blast; the game simply never gets old. I almost wish we didn’t already have such a beloved set, just so I’d have an excuse to purchase this vibrant, colorful Cornhole set – it’s absolutely gorgeous!

A beachy-colored set of cornhole boards and bags. The boards have orange, blue, and yellow stripes. The image also includes photos of the travel bag and bean bags -- there are four blue-striped bean bags with O's on them, and four orange-stiped bean bags with X's.

For ultimate portability and convenience, I recently acquired this inflatable Cornhole set, specifically for our upcoming family vacation this summer. Our traditional wooden Cornhole set, while fantastic, is far too bulky and heavy to transport for beach days or camping trips. This inflatable version, however, is absolutely perfect! It packs down small, is lightweight, and can be easily set up anywhere, from sandy beaches to grassy parks, ensuring our favorite game can travel with us wherever our adventures take us.

Yard Pong

This year, for Father’s Day, we surprised Joe with this fantastic Yard Pong set. We were all so eager to try it out that we couldn’t wait until the actual day, giving it to him more than a week early! This decision proved to be an instant hit, as Yard Pong has quickly become one of our absolute favorite outdoor games, delivering endless amusement and challenge. In fact, its addictive fun has recently edged out Cornhole for our top spot, becoming our go-to choice for family playtime.

Don’t let its seemingly simple concept fool you; Yard Pong is much harder than it looks, which is precisely what makes it so incredibly engaging and satisfying to play. The thrill of trying to land the oversized balls into the large red cups provides a delightful mix of skill, luck, and competitive spirit. Beyond the exciting gameplay, I particularly appreciate how efficiently it stores away when not in use, taking up minimal space in our garage. This combination of exhilarating challenge and practical storage makes Yard Pong a game we enthusiastically recommend for any family looking to add a dynamic and fun activity to their outdoor repertoire.

Trampoline + Trampoline Sprinkler

When our girls graduated from 5th grade this year, we decided to celebrate their milestone with a truly exciting gift: this fantastic trampoline. For years, they had pleaded for one, and for various reasons, including safety concerns and space considerations, we had always resisted. However, we finally caved, and I can honestly say we have zero regrets! It has transformed our backyard into a haven of energetic fun and an incredible source of physical activity for the entire family.

Not only do our girls absolutely adore it, spending countless hours bouncing and playing, but Joe and I also find ourselves hopping on it far more often than I ever would have anticipated. It’s an unexpectedly delightful way to get some exercise and share laughs. The real game-changer, however, was when we recently attached the trampoline sprinkler for the first time. This simple addition made jumping downright pleasant, even in the scorching summer heat. The gentle spray of water creates a refreshing oasis, turning a hot-weather activity into a perfectly cool and enjoyable experience. It’s truly a fantastic way to beat the heat, providing superior fun and physical engagement compared to a traditional kiddie pool, making it one of the best backyard additions for active families.

Other Popular Outdoor Games for Families

While my family and I have our cherished collection of backyard games, there’s a whole world of other popular outdoor activities that families across the globe genuinely love. These games offer diverse forms of entertainment, from fast-paced action to strategic challenges, ensuring there’s something to capture every family’s interest and energy level. Here’s a selection of highly-rated games that, while we don’t personally own them (yet!), consistently receive rave reviews for their ability to bring people together for outdoor fun.

Spikeball

Spikeball is arguably the most exciting game on this part of the list, and it’s one I am genuinely planning to order soon because we’ve been talking about getting it for ages. It truly looks like one of the most dynamic and fun outdoor games available! Our girls have played it extensively at school and are huge fans, and based on their enthusiasm and the game’s concept, it seems like an activity that our entire family will absolutely love. However, since we don’t currently own it, I can’t personally vouch for its popularity within my immediate household just yet.

Spikeball is an energetic game often described as a hybrid of volleyball and four-square, played around a small, circular net placed on the ground. It’s designed for two teams of two people, making it perfect for a family of four or even larger groups to rotate players. The gameplay is fast-paced and thrilling: one player serves the small rubber ball onto the net, bouncing it up towards the opposing team. The receiving team then has up to three alternating touches (like in volleyball) to hit the ball back onto the net, aiming to make it unreturnable for their opponents. It’s an excellent game for improving agility, reflexes, communication, and teamwork, guaranteeing a high-energy, engaging, and genuinely fun experience that will get everyone moving and laughing outdoors.

Croquet

Croquet is a game that I personally adore. There’s something so elegant and strategic about it, making it a truly timeless classic. If only our backyard were flat enough, I would undoubtedly invest in a high-quality set for our family. Unfortunately, our yard’s uneven terrain simply wouldn’t work for the precise nature of the game; that’s why we usually stick to playing Cornhole, Yard Pong, and similar activities on our reasonably flat driveway. Despite this, my affection for Croquet remains unwavering, and I particularly love this beautiful croquet set, which perfectly embodies the spirit of this traditional pastime.

Croquet is more than just a game; it’s a delightful blend of skill, strategy, and gentle physical activity, making it an ideal choice for families looking for a more relaxed yet engaging outdoor experience. Players use mallets to hit wooden or plastic balls through a series of wickets embedded in the ground, following a specific course. The goal is to navigate all the wickets and then hit a final stake before your opponents. It’s a fantastic way to enjoy the fresh air, engage in strategic thinking, and practice precision, all while fostering pleasant conversation and friendly rivalry. As a classic backyard game, Croquet truly never goes out of style, offering sophisticated fun for all ages.

Bocce Ball

Bocce ball is a cherished game with deep roots in Italy, and it has since grown into a beloved pastime enjoyed by people worldwide. The game’s appeal lies in its straightforward yet engaging nature: players take turns tossing larger bocce balls, aiming to get them as close as possible to a smaller target ball called a pallino. Points are scored based on the proximity of your balls to the pallino, adding an exciting element of precision and strategy to every throw.

Believe it or not, my personal affection for bocce ball blossomed when I had the joy of learning to play it with Joe’s grandmother at her retirement community. It was there that I truly understood its charm and accessibility. This beautiful game is wonderfully fun and perfectly manageable for individuals of all ages and activity levels, making it an ideal choice for multi-generational family gatherings. Its gentle pace allows for conversation and camaraderie, while still requiring enough skill to keep everyone invested.

I particularly appreciate the vibrant different colors and the practical design of this adorable bocce ball set. It’s not only visually appealing but also easy to transport and set up. One of the greatest advantages of bocce ball is that it doesn’t demand a huge, sprawling open area to play. You can enjoy this classic lawn game in a relatively small patch of grass, making it incredibly versatile for nearly any backyard or park setting. It’s a fantastic option for fostering connection and friendly competition without requiring intense physical exertion, perfect for a relaxing afternoon outdoors.

Tic Tac Toe, Yard Dice, Giant Jenga and More

Beyond our top picks, a vast array of other engaging outdoor games exists to ignite family fun, catering to various interests and energy levels. Imagine the strategic thinking involved in a supersized game of Tic Tac Toe, where every move on a large grid becomes a physical challenge. Envision the excitement of rolling oversized Yard Dice for classic games like Yahtzee or Farkle, bringing simple tabletop fun to a grander, more active scale. Picture the suspense and laughter that ensues with a towering game of Giant Jenga, where each block removal could bring the whole structure crashing down, testing steady hands and nerves of steel.

These are just a few examples of the diverse and exciting outdoor games available that promise to bring endless entertainment to your family gatherings, backyard barbecues, or sunny afternoons. Each offers a unique blend of physical activity, mental stimulation, and social interaction, creating perfect opportunities for bonding and memory-making.
