In the journey of homeownership, discovering a bonus room is akin to finding a hidden gem. For our family, it’s been a game-changer – a versatile sanctuary that perfectly blends communal family time with dedicated space for individual pursuits. This coveted area has swiftly become the heart of our home, a place where laughter echoes during family game nights, yet also offers our daughters (now 11) a vibrant haven to enjoy with friends, comfortably separated from the main living areas. The beauty of this distinction is that my husband, Joe, and I can unwind in peace, without the lively (and sometimes noisy!) sounds of foosball dominating our quiet moments. Today, I am thrilled to open our doors and share a detailed tour of this recently refreshed, multi-functional bonus room.

Every successful room design begins with a “crucial element,” a foundational piece that inspires the entire aesthetic. For this bonus room refresh, that element was undoubtedly the rug. The moment I discovered its vibrant pattern and inviting texture, I knew it was meant for this space. It was a dramatic realization, but entirely true! Following the principles I teach in my Designer in a Binder program, we meticulously measured the room to ensure we selected the perfect size area rug, laying the groundwork for a truly transformative refresh. This rug not only anchors the space but also infuses it with a playful energy that perfectly suits its multi-functional purpose.
When we first configured our bonus room, I extensively researched various bonus room ideas for families, aiming for a layout that maximized its potential. While that initial setup served us well for several years, our daughters’ evolving needs, particularly as they’ve grown to 11, meant a shift in priorities. They now craved more open floor space for active play, dance, or simply sprawling out, which our previous furniture arrangement didn’t quite accommodate. Recognizing this, we embarked on a layout redesign. Before moving a single piece of furniture, I diligently created a detailed space plan on paper. This crucial step, which I highly recommend for any room transformation, allowed us to visualize the new arrangement, troubleshoot potential issues, and ensure optimal flow and functionality before any heavy lifting began.
Our Bonus Room Storage Solutions
Maintaining an organized and functional bonus room, especially one frequented by active kids, can be a challenge. Effective storage is paramount to keeping clutter at bay and ensuring the space remains enjoyable for everyone. We’ve implemented several clever playroom and bonus room storage solutions that make tidying up a breeze and keep toys, games, and craft supplies neatly out of sight when not in use. While I previously shared a video tour of our storage, some key takeaways include utilizing closed cabinetry for visual calm, baskets for quick clean-ups, and furniture with built-in storage to maximize every inch of space. Smart storage allows the room to seamlessly transition from an active play zone to a relaxed family lounge, always feeling inviting and organized.
The Furniture Layout Reimagined
One of the most impactful changes in this refresh was our new furniture layout. It’s astonishing how we managed to gain a significant amount of open floor space, even while using almost all the same furniture pieces. The key was strategic placement and understanding how each item contributed to the room’s flow and function. This thoughtful rearrangement has unlocked the room’s true potential, providing ample space for our girls to play and move freely, while still offering distinct zones for relaxation and creativity. The transformation has truly optimized the bonus room for both active play and comfortable lounging, proving that sometimes, a new perspective on arrangement is all you need for a dramatic change. Here’s a glimpse of how the bonus room looks now:

The sitting area has become a true oasis of comfort and practicality. At its heart is our beloved pop-up coffee table, a piece that has earned its spot as one of our all-time favorite furniture purchases. Its versatile design means our girls frequently gather around it for coloring sessions, homework, or board games. I’m truly obsessed with discovering unique coffee tables that offer not just surface area, but also clever storage solutions and innovative features, enhancing both functionality and style in a busy family space.

Complementing our durable leather sofa, we’ve incorporated two incredibly comfortable and surprisingly stylish recliners. These aren’t your typical bulky recliners; they’re thoughtfully designed pieces that offer supreme comfort without compromising on aesthetics. They provide the perfect spot for reading, relaxing, or simply unwinding after a long day, adding another layer of cozy functionality to our versatile bonus room.

Curtains That Define the Mood
Curtains play a pivotal role in setting the tone and feel of any room, and in our bonus room, the choice was deliberate. These new curtains, which I also adored enough to use in Attley’s bathroom makeover, are simply exceptional. Their design feels wonderfully fun and casual, perfectly aligning with the relaxed and inviting atmosphere we aimed to create. Beyond their aesthetic appeal, they offer practical benefits, providing privacy and light control, which is essential for a room that transitions from bright play space to cozy movie night den. They are truly a testament to how the right window treatments can dramatically enhance a room’s character.

Personalizing the Walls: Art and Decor
Bringing personality to the walls of a bonus room is crucial for making it feel truly lived-in and loved. It took some thoughtful consideration to finalize our wall decor, but the results speak for themselves. We revitalized our existing monogram gallery wall by adding fresh paint to some of the “A” letters and strategically re-hanging them on the newly designated TV wall. I’m a huge proponent of a well-curated gallery wall – they’re fantastic for displaying personality and visual interest, and you can find my favorite gallery wall ideas and tips here for creating your own masterpiece.
Speaking of the TV, while this isn’t a high-tech Frame TV (you can read my unbiased review of the Samsung Frame TV here, as we have one in our family room), we’ve implemented a simple trick to elevate its appearance when not in use. I added some beautiful digital art to the screensaver, transforming it from a black void into an appealing focal point. It’s surprisingly easy to display digital art on any smart TV, instantly upgrading your space without a hefty investment.

Integrated seamlessly into the gallery wall is a vibrant, large DIY wall letter that I crafted using colorful felt balls. This piece adds a wonderful pop of texture and whimsy, showcasing that personalized, handmade decor can be both sophisticated and fun. It’s an excellent example of how creative DIY projects can infuse a room with unique charm.

On the opposite wall, we lovingly rehung enlarged versions of the DIY watercolor paintings my girls and I created together years ago. These pieces hold immense sentimental value and serve as a beautiful reminder of shared creative moments. Incorporating kids’ art into your decor is a fantastic way to personalize a space and celebrate family creativity. This personal touch makes the room uniquely ours, reflecting our journey and passions.

Finally, the back wall features another set of DIY painted canvases, adding depth and color to the room. If you prefer not to embark on a DIY art project, rest assured there are countless options for stunning artwork. I’ve curated some of my top art picks for a family room that offer both style and substance, ensuring your walls reflect your personal taste and complement your design aesthetic.

The Recreation Side of Our Bonus Room
The “recreation” side of our bonus room, a hub of activity and fun, saw minimal changes during this refresh, primarily focusing on optimizing the layout for better flow. Our trusty foosball table remains a cornerstone of family entertainment, providing endless hours of competitive fun. A notable addition to this zone is our Peloton, strategically placed to allow for convenient workouts without disrupting other activities. One aspect I always strive for in my home tours is authenticity. We genuinely live in and use these spaces, and that means sometimes showing the realities of family life. Yes, you’ll spot our daughters’ American Girl Doll collection, including horses and a bin of doll accessories, neatly tucked under the foosball table. It works for us! It’s a testament to creating spaces that are not just beautiful, but truly functional and reflective of how families genuinely interact with their homes.

The Desk and Crafting Area: A Hub of Creativity
Behind the main sofa, we’ve carved out a dedicated desk and crafting area for the girls, a space designed to foster creativity and focused work. This area features a spacious desktop, ingeniously created using an IKEA kitchen counter – one of my absolute favorite IKEA desk hacks for its durability and expansive surface. Two stools are tucked neatly underneath, providing comfortable seating when in use and sliding away discreetly to maintain open space when not needed. There’s ample clearance behind the desk, ensuring easy access and comfortable seating. This zone is perfect for homework, art projects, or any creative endeavors, providing a quiet, organized nook within the larger bonus room. It’s a practical and inspiring setup that encourages learning and imaginative play.

The Bonus Room Source List and Designer Picks
Many of you often ask about where we source our pieces, and I’m happy to provide as much detail as possible! While some items, particularly custom DIY artwork or pieces collected over time, aren’t directly linkable, I’ve done my best to provide alternatives or direct links for everything else. For instance, the beautiful “A” monograms on our gallery wall have been collected over eight years, making direct links impossible, but they inspire a personalized approach to decor. Our exact recliners are no longer available, but I’ve linked to a nearly identical option and encourage you to explore other stylish recliner options here. The versatile IKEA cabinets used in the crafting area can be found by searching “EKET” on the IKEA website. For other furniture and decor elements, please browse the curated list below.
