• Two Twin Flat Sheets: The star of our project! Twin sheets are often ideal for standard window widths and offer a good length. Choose a color and pattern that matches your room’s decor. Consider the fabric’s weight and opacity – a thicker cotton or linen blend will offer more privacy and a more substantial feel than a lightweight percale.
• 1/2 Inch Ribbon: Approximately 2-3 yards per panel, depending on your curtain width and desired tab spacing. Choose a ribbon that complements your sheet color. Grosgrain or satin ribbon works well for durability and a neat finish.
• Straight Pins: Essential for temporarily securing the ribbon tabs before sewing.
• Sewing Machine: A basic machine with a straight stitch function is all you need. Don’t be intimidated if you’re new to sewing; this project is very forgiving.
• Matching Thread: Select a high-quality polyester thread that closely matches the color of your sheets and ribbon for a seamless look.

Steps:

1. Measure and Hem for Perfect Length:

This means I only had to create a new hem at what would become the top of my curtain panel, trimming the sheet to the desired total length minus the length of the existing top hem. For example, if your finished length is 96 inches and you’re using the sheet’s original top hem as your curtain’s bottom, you would measure 96 inches from the top of the sheet (which will be the top of your curtain) and then cut and hem the remaining portion.

2. Prepare and Pin Ribbon Tabs:

   Cut your chosen ribbon into 3-inch lengths. These will form the “tabs” that your curtain rod will pass through, creating that elegant back-tab look. Take one ribbon piece, fold it in half to create a loop, and pin it to the back of the top edge of your curtain panel. For even spacing and optimal support, aim to place the tabs approximately 6 to 8 inches apart across the width of the curtain. Ensure that the raw edges of the ribbon align with the raw edge of your sheet’s top hem, and the loop extends towards the bottom of the curtain. Consistency in spacing is key for a polished appearance.

   

3. Sew the Ribbon Tabs in Place:

   With your ribbon tabs securely pinned, it’s time to sew them onto the curtain panel. Using your sewing machine, stitch each ribbon tab into place along the top edge of the curtain. I recommend stitching approximately 1/3 of an inch from each raw edge of the ribbon, forming a secure rectangular attachment to the curtain fabric. Be sure to backstitch at the beginning and end of each seam to reinforce the stitching, preventing the tabs from pulling loose when the curtain is hung. This step is surprisingly quick; with a little practice, you can sew all the tabs for one panel in about 4-5 minutes, even as a beginner. Once all the tabs are sewn, iron the top hem down over the raw edges of the ribbon and topstitch for a clean, finished look.
