A Tween’s Dream Retreat: Unveiling Avery’s Mid-Century Modern Bedroom Transformation
After nearly a year of settling into our new home, we are absolutely thrilled to finally unveil a space that truly reflects its occupant: our tween daughter Avery’s stunning mid-century modern bedroom! This project has been a labor of love, a collaborative effort that perfectly blends her unique style with functional design. The result? A room she adores, a sanctuary that feels entirely her own. Mission accomplished, and then some!

The Journey Begins: A Room in Transition
When we first moved in, Avery’s room was a collection of temporary solutions rather than a cohesive design. We had given her a beautiful mid-century modern bed from our old guest room – a piece we loved, and a necessary transfer since her old built-in bunk beds couldn’t come with us. Her bedside table was a charming mid-century piece I found on Facebook Marketplace, a lucky temporary score. For storage, we moved two oversized dressers and an old bench into her room, primarily because she needed drawers, and we simply didn’t have anywhere else to put them. Some artwork was hung, but the overall feeling was unmistakably “thrown together.” This wasn’t the personalized haven we knew she deserved, and it certainly wasn’t optimized for a growing tween.
This is what her room looked like before we embarked on its proper transformation, a year-long placeholder that served its purpose but lacked intentionality.

The IKEA dressers, though perfectly functional, were simply too large for the space and offered more drawer storage than Avery truly needed. These were pieces we had bought for our girls’ nursery over a decade ago, so they had certainly served their time! Our goal was to create a lighter, more spacious feel while still providing ample storage for her evolving needs.
Collaborative Design: Merging Styles and Personal Preferences
With Avery’s active involvement, we finalized the design just a few days ago, and her reaction has been pure joy. It’s important to note that Avery’s aesthetic vision is wonderfully distinct from my own. Unlike her sister and me, she isn’t drawn to a riot of colors; instead, she gravitates strongly towards a specific palette: purple and green. This clear preference became the foundation of our design choices. Another interesting challenge was her discerning taste in artwork. Finding pieces she genuinely loved and wanted on her walls proved to be quite the delightful puzzle, pushing us to think creatively about wall decor.
When we asked Avery about her absolute must-haves for her new room, one request stood out above all others: she desperately wanted a dedicated desk space. From our perspective, Joe and I were focused on addressing the pervasive clutter. Avery’s books had been haphazardly tossed into the old bench and piled on her bedside table, and her countless “treasures” – from seemingly random rocks and feathers to various little doodads – were scattered across every available surface. While we absolutely cherish her imaginative spirit and her love for these small discoveries, the sheer volume meant we needed a smarter way to contain them. We knew organized storage was key to maintaining a serene and functional environment. To tackle this, we invested in two stylish storage bins to help corral these cherished items.
Strategic Storage and Functional Layout: Transforming the Space
Our solution to meet Avery’s request for a desk while also addressing the storage issue was both innovative and efficient. We decided to strategically place a desk between a pair of elegant bookshelves, which we carefully relocated from our family room upstairs. These bookshelves are truly beloved pieces; you might even remember them from the dining room in our previous home. Their beauty lies not only in their design but also in their practicality. They are significantly more shallow, narrower, and visually “lighter” than the old IKEA dressers they replaced, making a dramatic difference in opening up the room and creating a more airy atmosphere.

Despite the added bookshelf storage, Avery still needed a few dedicated drawers for clothing and personal items. To address this, we selected a charming and simple three-drawer dresser. Our initial thought was to use it as a replacement for her nightstand. However, after careful consideration, we realized a more logical placement was on the opposite side of her bed. This positioning offers practical benefits due to its proximity to her closet, as she frequently gets dressed on that particular side of the room. This thoughtful layout ensures that every piece of furniture serves a purpose, contributing to both the room’s aesthetic and its daily functionality.
