From Chaos to Calm: Unveiling the Power of DIY Closet Systems
Welcome to a deeper dive into the world of closet organization, straight from our very own (now perfectly organized!) closets! We’re constantly striving to enhance our audio quality, and it turns out, our newly optimized closet spaces provide excellent acoustics. But beyond the audio benefits, our personal experience living with and transforming our closets has solidified our belief: the biggest overlooked enhancement in nearly every home is the simple installation of a DIY closet system. It’s a game-changer for daily living.

As we recently embarked on the extensive process of packing for a move, the true value and sheer efficiency of our organized closets became incredibly apparent. The investment of time and effort we poured into whipping our closets into shape has paid dividends in terms of reduced stress and increased functionality. We’ve tackled a variety of closet projects throughout our home, including Avery’s and Attley’s closets, our expansive master closet, the practical coat closet downstairs (with details coming soon!), the welcoming guest room closet, and even the often-neglected linen closet. Each time we installed a DIY closet system, the same thought echoed: “Why did we ever wait this long?” This recurring sentiment underscores the immediate and profound positive impact these systems have on everyday life, transforming frustrating clutter into effortless order.

Conquering Closet Catastrophes: From Overwhelm to Order
The struggle with disorganization is real, and it’s a pain point many homeowners can relate to. Take, for instance, Thea’s closet situation. Her house, with its charming older construction, presents some serious closet challenges. Her main closet consistently struggles with overwhelming clutter, which her husband aptly describes as “vomiting on the floor.” This perpetual mess isn’t just an eyesore; it evokes a genuine emotional reaction and represents a significant daily pain point. While Thea recently undertook a massive purging effort (and you can find our invaluable tips for purging here), the lack of a proper system means the chaos inevitably returns. This scenario isn’t unique; many homes, even with fairly organized closets, are still vastly underutilizing their space.
In our current environment, where many of us spend more time at home, there’s arguably no more impactful yet inexpensive and straightforward way to dramatically improve your daily quality of life than by installing a DIY closet system. This is the perfect opportunity to methodically sort through your belongings, assess what you truly need, and meticulously plan how to best utilize every inch of your available space. This thoughtful pre-planning is crucial for designing a system that genuinely meets your specific storage and organizational needs.
Choosing Your Perfect DIY Closet System: Easy Closets vs. IKEA Boaxel
When it comes to selecting the right DIY closet system, you have excellent options tailored to different budgets and design preferences. For our master bedroom closet, we opted for Easy Closets. This represented more of an investment, reflecting its role in a primary living space where long-term durability and custom aesthetics were paramount. We’ve even updated it recently, tweaking elements that have proven most effective for our lifestyle. Easy Closets offers a robust design process and high-quality materials, making it ideal for those seeking a more built-in, furniture-grade feel.
For secondary closets, such as children’s rooms or guest spaces, we consistently turned to the IKEA Algot system. While Algot has since been replaced, its successor, the IKEA Boaxel system, offers the same incredible value and modular flexibility. These systems are surprisingly simple to install and remarkably affordable. You can expect to spend maybe two hours on installation and just a few hundred dollars for a relatively large walk-in closet, making it an incredibly cost-effective solution for maximizing space.
Did you know a small closet you simply reach into is formally called a “reach-in” closet? Consider that your fun fact for the day – you’re welcome! While installing these systems can be slightly trickier with older plaster walls, it’s absolutely still doable with the right tools and a little patience.
IKEA makes the process even easier with their convenient Click and Collect service (though delivery can sometimes be slow, so plan ahead!). You can effortlessly transport your entire order to your car using one of their flat carts. Their online planning tool is incredibly user-friendly, allowing you to design your system before you even leave home. For more insider IKEA shopping strategies and tips, be sure to listen to our dedicated podcast episode – it’s one of our most popular!
We’ve extensively analyzed Thea’s closet woes, identifying all the ways her current space is being underutilized. With a budget of around $75 and just a few hours of dedicated effort, Tasha is confident that Thea’s closet can undergo a complete and transformative makeover. The IKEA Boaxel system, in particular, offers fantastic versatility, incorporating not just racks and shelves but also integrated drawers, making it incredibly easy to store everything from folded clothes to accessories.

The Lasting Impact: Enhanced Living, Increased Home Value
The benefits of a well-designed closet system extend far beyond mere aesthetics. Making things easily accessible, especially for children, is paramount. We’ve heard countless stories, including Thea’s own daughter, who has broken numerous coat hangers simply because she couldn’t efficiently access her clothes. A functional system empowers kids to manage their belongings, fostering independence and reducing daily frustrations for the whole family.
Furthermore, consider the amazing return on investment when it comes to selling your home. We can confidently say that when our house was on the market, prospective buyers were genuinely impressed by how impeccably organized our closets were. The perceived value of an organized home versus the actual cost of installing these DIY systems is remarkably disproportionate in the best way possible. It’s an investment that pays off both in daily convenience and potential resale value, creating a lasting positive impression.
On a side note, we’d love your feedback! Please let us know if you notice a significant improvement in our podcast audio quality. We’re truly thrilled with how much better it sounds now that we’re recording from our perfectly optimized closets!
