We’re absolutely thrilled to share the stunning transformation of our powder room, a space that now radiates modern flair, vibrant color, and an undeniable sense of joy. We genuinely couldn’t be more in love with how this small but impactful renovation turned out!

There’s a special kind of elation that comes with completing a major home improvement milestone, and for us, that moment is finally here. Finishing this powder room renovation means that the entire first floor of our home is now completely remodeled! This journey has spanned nearly seven years of dedicated work, planning, and countless DIY hours, and reaching this point feels incredibly gratifying. Every step, every paint stroke, and every tile laid has culminated in this beautiful moment, making all the effort truly worthwhile.

Curious to see the magic unfold? We’ve documented our entire DIY bathroom remodel process, showcasing how we managed to complete this significant upgrade in an astonishingly short timeframe – just seven days of focused work! Dive into the video below for a visual step-by-step journey, offering insights and inspiration that might just kickstart your own home renovation dreams.

The Bathroom “Before”: A Journey from Bland to Beautiful

Every transformation begins with a “before,” and our powder room was no exception. When we first purchased our home over six years ago, this bathroom was a picture of early 2000s mediocrity. It was overwhelmingly beige, basic, and desperately outdated, lacking any character or charm. The fixtures were generic, the finishes were dull, and it served its purpose but offered no aesthetic delight.

Outdated, basic, and beige powder room before any renovations.

Around five years ago, we attempted a budget-friendly refresh to inject some personality into the space without a full gut renovation. This included applying a stylish DIY concrete overlay to the sink and countertop, which instantly elevated its look. We also gave the existing cabinet a fresh coat of paint using one of our proven cabinet painting methods. To further personalize the space, we crafted a unique DIY wood frame with a concrete inlay for the builder-grade mirror and updated the outdated lighting fixtures with a simple spray paint treatment and new energy-efficient bulbs. These changes certainly made the room more presentable and functional, moving it from dreary to somewhat decent, as you can see in the image below. However, we always knew a more comprehensive transformation was on the horizon to truly align it with our home’s evolving modern aesthetic.

The Renovation in Progress: Our DIY Powder Room Journey

This time, our vision was bolder, and our approach was comprehensive. We opted for a complete overhaul, starting from scratch to create a space that truly reflected our style and met our functional needs. The process, though intensive, was meticulously planned, allowing us to achieve incredible results in a short period. Here’s a glimpse into our progress over the past few weeks, detailing every major step we undertook to bring this modern, colorful powder room to life:

  • **Full Demolition:** We began by completely demoing the entire bathroom, right down to the subfloor. This critical first step cleared the canvas, allowing us to address any underlying issues and build a fresh foundation.
  • **Fresh Walls and Ceiling:** We applied a creamy white paint to both the walls and ceiling, creating a bright, clean, and inviting base that would perfectly complement the vibrant elements to follow. This choice ensured the space felt open and airy despite its compact size.
  • **Door and Sign Painting:** The bathroom door received a fresh coat of paint, and we designed, painted, and hung a charming powder room sign, adding a touch of personalized detail right at the entrance.
  • **Colorful Wall Mural Creation:** One of the most exciting and transformative steps was painting the colorful wall mural. This artistic endeavor brought immense personality and a playful, modern edge to the space, instantly becoming a focal point.
  • **New Cement Floor Tile Installation:** We meticulously installed exquisite new cement floor tiles from Saba Tile. This choice was driven by a desire for a unique, sophisticated, and non-farmhouse aesthetic, and the smooth finish and striking pattern immediately elevated the room’s character.
  • **Vanity Installation:** A brand new, distinctive vanity from Signature Hardware was carefully installed. This piece, more akin to a fine piece of furniture, played a pivotal role in establishing the modern and chic atmosphere we envisioned.
  • **Toilet Replacement:** We upgraded to a new, modern toilet featuring a sleek design and enhanced functionality, seamlessly integrating with the overall updated look.
  • **Vanity Light Fixture:** A new vanity light was hung, carefully selected to complement the brass accents and provide optimal illumination for the space.
  • **Faucet Installation:** A stylish and water-efficient new faucet was installed, adding a touch of polished elegance and superior functionality to the vanity area.
  • **Mirror Hanging:** A contemporary mirror was carefully positioned above the vanity, reflecting light and making the compact room feel larger and more open.
  • **Accessorizing:** Finally, the space was accessorized with a new towel bar, toilet paper holder, and carefully chosen decor items that tied the entire design together, adding those crucial finishing touches.

The Grand Bathroom REVEAL: Modern, Colorful, and Uniquely Ours

Enough with the preamble! The moment you’ve been waiting for is here. Let’s feast our eyes on the finished product—a powder room that has been utterly transformed into a modern, colorful oasis. We are beyond delighted with every detail, and we can’t wait to share it all with you!

It’s genuinely challenging for me to pinpoint just one favorite element in this newly renovated space, as every detail contributes to its overall charm and uniqueness. However, I want to highlight a few things that truly make this powder room special and align perfectly with our modern, colorful aesthetic. First and foremost, let’s talk about the incredible **Danenburg vanity** from Signature Hardware. This isn’t just a vanity; it feels like a meticulously crafted piece of furniture, bringing an unexpected level of sophistication and warmth to the bathroom. The subtle yet striking herringbone pattern at the top is a design detail that truly elevates it, while the mid-century modern legs infuse it with a timeless, elegant vibe that I absolutely adore. Its unique design sets the tone for the entire room, making a stylish statement without overpowering the space.

Next on my list of cherished elements is the cement tile. I have dreamt of incorporating cement tile into one of our renovations for ages. There’s something inherently smooth, chic, and incredibly tactile about it. However, a common challenge I faced was that many of the cement tiles currently on the market lean heavily into a “farmhouse” aesthetic, which simply isn’t my style. Determined to find something different, I eventually resorted to a very specific Google search: “cement tile not farmhouse.” After sifting through a myriad of results, I stumbled upon Saba Tile, and it was truly love at first sight! Their modern and vibrant patterns were exactly what I had been searching for. I contacted the owner almost immediately to propose a collaboration and was absolutely thrilled when he agreed. Seriously, this tile is everything we wanted and more; it’s a game-changer for the entire space, adding a layer of sophisticated artistry.

Now, let’s discuss the carefully chosen fixtures that adorn this charming powder room. The moment I discovered this particular vanity light, I knew it was the perfect fit. Its beautiful satin brass finish instantly caught my eye, providing a sophisticated yet understated shimmer that complements the room’s warm tones. The design is sleek and contemporary, offering ample, inviting light without being overly decorative, striking that ideal balance between form and function.

To ensure a cohesive and polished look throughout the space, we consciously selected the towel bar and toilet paper holder in the very same satin brass finish. These smaller details, though often overlooked, play a crucial role in creating a harmonious design. The matching finishes provide a sense of continuity and thoughtful curation, tying all the metallic elements together beautifully and reinforcing the room’s modern aesthetic with subtle elegance.

And then there’s our truly stunning faucet, a piece that brings both glamour and practicality to the vanity. We chose this exquisite polished brass faucet from Peerless, and I am absolutely captivated by its presence. It masterfully achieves a perfect balance of contemporary style and dependable functionality, all while being commendably water-efficient. The gorgeous, highly reflective finish gleams like a piece of fine jewelry, standing out beautifully against the crisp white countertop and walls. What makes me particularly happy is how the shiny surface playfully reflects the vibrant colors of the wall mural, creating dynamic visual interest and adding another layer of personality to the space. It’s a small detail that makes a big impact.

Perhaps the most audacious and personally rewarding element in this renovation is the hand-painted wall mural. To be entirely honest, I was initially quite terrified to commit to such a bold artistic statement on the wall. However, I pushed past that fear, and I am incredibly happy I did! I am absolutely obsessed with the outcome. This colorful, abstract design infuses the powder room with an undeniable energy and truly makes the space feel unique and full of character. It’s a vibrant backdrop that perfectly encapsulates the joyful spirit we aimed for. Keep an eye out—a detailed tutorial for this mural will be coming soon, so you can create your own statement wall!

Beyond the major elements, there are several thoughtful small touches that truly complete the room’s aesthetic. For instance, I designed and created a unique piece of artwork specifically for the space above the toilet. This custom art piece complements the vibrant wall mural and ties into the overall color scheme, adding another layer of visual interest and personal expression without cluttering the compact area.

Oh, and let’s not forget the new toilet! While often overlooked, choosing the right toilet can significantly impact a bathroom’s overall feel. I specifically love the fact that our new toilet features a sleek, square base. This subtle design detail instantly lends a more contemporary and streamlined aesthetic, diverging from the traditional rounded bases and contributing to the clean, modern lines present throughout the entire renovation.

Phew! What an incredible journey and an amazing transformation! This room has truly come a long way from its humble beginnings. As is tradition with our reveals, I have to finish it off with a compelling side-by-side comparison. Witness the dramatic change from the outdated “before” to the vibrant and modern “after” – a testament to the power of DIY and thoughtful design.
