- Dap Rapid Fuse Wood Adhesive: A strong, fast-drying wood glue is essential for securing the wood trim. One bottle should be more than sufficient for this project.
- White Skimcoat (Concrete Overlay Mix): This is the key ingredient for achieving that concrete look. We highly recommend a product specifically designed for thin concrete overlays.
- **Painter’s Tape:** Essential for protecting surrounding surfaces from the skimcoat.
- **Sandpaper:** Various grits (e.g., 120-220 grit) for smoothing out the concrete layers.
- **Table Saw:** For precisely cutting your accent wood pieces.

Step-by-Step Guide to Your Custom Range Hood Finish:
Step 1: Ensure Your Range Hood is Properly Installed and Framed
As previously mentioned, the first critical step is the professional installation of your range hood unit and the construction of its basic enclosure. Our contractor installed our specific Broan range hood (sourced from Build.com) and built a sturdy frame around it using plain plywood. This foundational boxing is essential for both structural integrity and to provide a surface for your decorative finish. While the plywood boxing process isn’t overly complex, involving venting and electrical components often necessitates professional installation to meet safety standards and pass inspections. This is why our contractor insisted on handling this initial phase.
For a truly streamlined design, we opted against traditional crown molding at the top of the vent hood. Instead, we achieved a clean transition by finishing the top edge with a simple 1×6 wood piece, which I then caulked and painted to blend seamlessly with the ceiling. This minimalist approach enhances the modern aesthetic we were aiming for. Use high-quality painter’s tape to create crisp, clean lines around the base of the range hood, where it meets the backsplash or any other finished surfaces. This simple step will save you a lot of cleanup effort later and ensure a professional-looking result. You want to avoid any accidental splatters or smudges of the white concrete on your pristine kitchen cabinets.

Step 3: Mix Your White Concrete Skimcoat to Perfection
Now, it’s time to prepare your white concrete skimcoat. This product is fantastic – it’s designed for thin overlays, making it ideal for creating a concrete look on various surfaces without adding significant weight or bulk. We’ve had great success with this specific skimcoat on previous projects, including our DIY concrete fireplace, DIY concrete vanity overlay, and even DIY wooden step stools. It’s incredibly inexpensive and surprisingly easy to work with, making us huge fans!
To mix your skimcoat, pour a small, manageable amount of the dry mix into your drywall mud pan. Gradually add water, mixing thoroughly with a small putty knife until you achieve a consistency similar to thick pancake batter or frosting – thick enough to cling to the knife but still spreadable. Once mixed, let the mixture sit for about 5 minutes; this allows the polymers to fully hydrate and prevents air bubbles. After this brief rest, give it another good stir. Your skimcoat is now ready to apply! Remember, this product has a limited working time, typically around 5-10 minutes before it starts to thicken too much. To avoid waste and ensure consistent application, always mix small batches at a time. If a batch becomes too thick or unworkable, discard it and mix a fresh one.

Step 4: Apply Your First Thin Layer of Skimcoat
With your skimcoat mixed, it’s time for the first coat. Using your drywall knife, apply a very THIN and even layer of the concrete mixture to the surfaces of your range hood. Use long, smooth strokes, maintaining consistent pressure. The goal for this initial coat is not full, opaque coverage, but rather to create a bonding layer and fill any minor imperfections. It’s perfectly normal for the first coat to look somewhat patchy or “messy” – don’t be alarmed! This is part of the process. Focus on spreading it as thinly and evenly as possible. If you’re new to skimcoating or encounter more imperfections, you might need four or even five thin coats to achieve that perfectly smooth, concrete-like surface. Remember, patience is key. The photo below illustrates what the second coat often looks like as it dries – a bit splotchy and imperfect. There’s no need to panic; this is completely normal and will be smoothed out with subsequent layers and sanding!

Step 7: Final Sanding and Sealing for Protection
Once you are completely satisfied with the coverage and smoothness of your concrete finish, it’s time for the final touches. Perform a thorough hand-sanding of the entire surface using a fine-grit sandpaper (e.g., 220 grit) to achieve a silky-smooth feel. Remove all sanding dust with a damp cloth, allowing the surface to dry completely. Then, apply a high-quality water-based acrylic concrete sealer with a satin finish. We highly recommend a product like Quikrete 873002 Concrete Cure And Seal Satin Finish. This sealer will not only protect your concrete from moisture, stains, and general wear but also enhance its natural beauty, giving it a subtle sheen and a more refined look.
When applying the sealer, follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully. It’s crucial to apply thin, even coats and avoid leaving any puddles, as this can lead to an uneven finish. While the sealer may appear milky white upon application, rest assured that it will dry clear. Pay close attention to the recommended drying and recoating times to ensure optimal protection and a durable finish.
Step 8: Add Your Wood Accent for a Touch of Warmth
The final step in bringing your custom range hood to life is adding the beautiful wood accent band at the bottom. As we mentioned, we utilized salvaged cedar from an old fence – the very same wood that formed our DIY herringbone plank wall, lending a cohesive design element to our home. However, feel free to choose any wood species or finish that complements your kitchen’s aesthetic. Options range from stained oak for a classic feel, to raw walnut for modern warmth, or even painted pine for a pop of color.
For a straightforward application, the easiest method is to miter the corners of your wood pieces (if desired for a seamless look) and then simply adhere them directly to the surface of the range hood using a strong wood adhesive like Dap Rapid Fuse Wood Adhesive. This approach is simple, effective, and yields excellent results, which is what we would generally recommend for most DIYers.
However, my husband, Joe, envisioned a slightly more intricate, “fancy” look where the wood trim would subtly wrap around the very bottom edge of the range hood, creating a truly seamless and custom finish (perhaps in case someone decided to inspect the underside of our vent hood!). While this level of detail might be beyond what most people undertake, here’s a peek at the underlying construction of our specific wood accent if you’re curious about a more advanced technique. For simplicity, the direct application method with mitered corners is generally preferred.

Regardless of your chosen method, once the wood pieces are cut to size and fit, apply your Dap Rapid Fuse Wood Adhesive generously to the back of the wood, then carefully position it on the range hood. Use clamps to hold the cedar firmly in place while the adhesive cures. Ensure the clamps are snug but not so tight that they damage the wood or displace the adhesive.
